Reading Response:
Virtual reality : advances in research and applications / editor, Zachary Hill
In this book it is explained how virtual reality is being used in medicine to reduce symptoms of phobia, ED's and obesity. The reading explains how virtual reality goggles are used to create a space where the patient is closer to the place of fear and how this can help psychologists to further their understanding of the patients symptom. These situations also help the patient to speak more accurately about the symptoms they feel and enables a more effective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy assessment.
VR is applied in surgical rehearsal as a way of practising skill and accuracy. This has been found to be useful and i can imagine the waste of materials on testing tools would be lowered.
In patients with ED (Eating disorder) virtual reality is used as well to morph the body and create a understanding of body dysmorphia by enabling the patient to appear in front of a mirror and push and pull the body, showing its' BMI and healthy weight range. Another application is using Virtual Reality to appear in front of a meal and speak about they way that they feel whilst a meal is consumed.
In patients with Phobia it was noted that the results in virtual experiences were limited as fewer patients were willing to address their phobias in VR and returning fears were common so the treatment would be long-term. The book stated how this is more achievable than ever because of the affordability of Virtual Headsets at the current time.
