Final Spatial Intervention Proposal
I intend to create a space which addressed issues of deforestation and paper waste. The game will enhance the acknowledgement of deforestation where excess paper is used. The average Kiwi uses 182.4 kilos of paper a year and for every tonne of paper used takes 99 tonnes of water to produce. People still however use paper however in excess and this is having a massive impact on our forests and areas which home native animals. This is an ecological issue where people in urban spaces often don't see the physical impact. I have created a space which allows people to experience the harm to our forests and engage with the space. This virtual environment relies on some reasonable spatial factors such as landscape and imagery of trees as these entities locate the viewer to where the issue is happening. Also if this experience was to change the impact of their actions in physical space, then they must engage with the reasonable cognitive psychology, that this space could exist (Economu). The interaction of the space is integral to the experience as well, as it is a simulation of how they interact with objects in physical space and how if they adjust their physical actions, what impact this will have on the environment being portrayed. The interaction of this site intends interaction with paper waste materials such as food packaging and news papers. As you pick up more and more material and place them in the virtual bin, each tree will start falling down. This depicting the impact that paper waste has on the trees. For each 3 trees that fall down, one of the birds that inhabit the space will fly away. This depicting the uninhabitable space that they are creating through paper waste. This is intended to engage with their cognitive empathy, affective and hopefully compassionate empathy, which will translate into their response to paper in physical space. The virtual experience will be dubbed with facts about how much paper waste an individual has in each day and speak about similar areas and animals that have been impacted. “If you show somebody the consequences of their actions in virtual reality, it makes them rethink their physical behaviour”(Bailenson)
Initial Plans for Interactive Enviroment:
These images show a Perspective and Plan of the the virtual environment I intend on creating.
- The location for the space will be a generic forest scape surrounded by hills.
- The areas where there is deforestation will be darker green and brown colours to show the impact of the terrain by the trees falling, the brighter areas will be depicted where the trees are still alive and well.
- The location of the viewpoint will be surrounded by trees but as the interaction is made, trees will start to fall and the space left behind will be derelict, with only tree stumps and twigs remaining.
- The intention will be that as the viewer interacts with the paper, the impact on the environment will be depicted to them.
- This intends to entice awareness of paper waste and use to the viewer.
