In class week one we were introduced to previous work from other spatial design students at level 400. We then looked at where our interests lay, looking back at our own previous work and what we had learnt through our degrees so far.
The previous work that stood out to me were:
SPACE 100 - Mihimihi - Home
In first year our brief was to create a space which captured the feeling of being our home place. I created a space that reminded me of Fort Dorset. What stood out to me about the area was the wind, crashing waves and wide open space.
Spatial 200 - Puna - Ritual Experience
In second year we were given the brief to create a space that reflected on another class members daily ritual. My partner said, something that was quite ritualistic to her was, wearing headphones when walking to and from university. She said it was comforting to be her own space when out in public and it helped her to enjoy the journey. Our site for this project was a singular room of our choice in a state house in Wellington, NZ. I chose to use the bedroom for my spatial design of this ritual as it reflects a comfortable memorable surrounding.
I designed a dodecahedron shaped structure, made out of corien and MDF. This encompassing structure is intended to reflect safety and isolation and is equally shaped, reflecting the equal weight distributed on your head when wearing head phones. I deconstructed the sculpture to represent her struggle to keep focused when without this ritual.
The video I created to present the space i created was mixed with a bit stock sound to help image how the ritual played a part in her life. I liked the way that i could more clearly present these ideas through a motion picture.
