Scene 1 - Intro - Introducing Selam
What is interesting about the space is that you get to experience the space and view it as you like by the opportunity to look around and explore the digital landscape. You are allowed the opportunity to scan the water and further imagine what it might feel like to reach out and touch it. The absence of people in the opening scene it greatly recognised as you search for people in space where they are not there. The space you are in feels vast and you can understand the distance you might have to go to to reach water or food. The spatial quality of the film is captivating in this way and you are presented with not just an audio understanding of the narrative but a spatial one also. In this way it gives you a greater view of the scene and mood.
I found the moment where I caught eyes with Selam interesting because it felt that for a second that she was looking straight at me and engaging with me. I found this very captivating and emotion provoking. Because of the way that she made eye contact with the camera, there was a connection and effort for understanding that came across in the film.
Scene 2:
In this scene the frame is full of moving entities, you may feel like you should get out of the way of people walking past or doing work although you know you are only there to perceive the space. The scene captured shows Selam speaking about her daily routine and introducing the viewer to her siblings.
At the end of the film, there is a water source built in the village from drilling a whole deep into the ground. In this scene everyone around is excited, happy and hugging, it is interesting to see how apart of the scene I felt and found myself smiling also. This may provide reason to believe that virtual spaces can further link your emotional recognition to a virtual space than a 2 dimensional screen.
Another thing to note is the 3 dimentionality of the videography, the objects seem to have a depth to them with is very convincing. I will look into how this is done for my next experiment in immersive journalism
